Barbunia (jarbida) - What is this fish?
About Barbounia
Sanfan or false barbounia — is a fish originally native to the Red Sea.
It is actively spreading in the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal.
In Israel, it was first observed in 2006, and by now, it has become one of the most common fish in local waters. It is popularly called «jarbida», «barbounia», or «sanfan».
This fish is characterized by a reddish hue and reaches a maximum length of about 25 cm, though individuals of around 15 cm are more common. Its upper caudal fin is elongated and ends in a thin filament, making it easily recognizable. The sanfan feeds on mollusks, small fish, and other marine organisms, gathering food from the seabed.
Where and How to Catch Barbounia
Habitats
The sanfan prefers sandy and muddy seabed areas at depths of 29 to 83 meters in the Mediterranean Sea, though in the Red Sea, it can be found at depths from 22 to 200 meters. In Israel, it is mainly caught at depths of 35–37 meters near marinas. The fish has become dominant in trawl catches, displacing the red mullet (Mullus barbatus), which was previously more common.
Fishing Methods
Sport Fishing:
Sanfan is a popular target for sport fishing with bait. Depths of 30–45 meters are best suited for catching it. Use light rods with bottom tackle, as the fish stays close to the seabed. Popular baits include shrimp, squid pieces, or worms. Fishing is possible from yachts or boats, as depths of 30 meters start about 5 km from the shore. A license is required for fishing from vessels, which can be obtained on the gov.il website.Fishing from a Yacht Without a License:
